Meet Liran Seizman, a juicy digital artist who makes gnarly illustrations and cute Photoshop tutorials by cleverly combining charm with a heaping dash of fun darkness. I was lucky to find her work when I was digging through illustration tutorials. By the by, she’s written a bunch of tutorials I totally recommend, nay, insist that you check them out (after reading the interview, of course). Enough of boring ol’ me though, here’s Liran:
HI LIRAN! MIND A BRIEF INTRODUCTION? I COULD INTRODUCE YOU BECAUSE I’VE DIGITALLY STALKED YOU – BUT YOU’RE WAY COOLER THAN ME.

HOW DID YOUR ILLUSTRATION LOVE BLOSSOM?
My mother was an artist – so I grew up “in the scene.” Although my training was mostly graphic design, one day I discovered a graphics tablet and all its possibilities. I instantly knew I could completely devote myself to digital painting and illustration.
Forest Kids – this one makes me want to be young again, almost.
WHAT CONVINCED YOU TO ACTUALLY BECOME AN ARTIST FOR A LIVING?
Well, my whole life has revolved around this; I’ve always loved to paint, draw and make things. It was like the decision was predetermined – it was more a consideration as to which branch of the visual arts I would finally dedicate myself to.

DO YOU DIG IT?
Yes, I totally, totally, totally dig it. It’s a lucky thing to stick to what one loves. It’s certainly not an easy road as it requires constant learning and focused dedication. It’s a perpetual race to outdo yourself every day, but it’s also very satisfying to see the results. Of course, there’s also the delightful opportunity to share and relate with the public and clients.
My Bug – oof, doesn’t look this one is going to turn out well.
WHAT MEDIUMS DO YOU WORK WITH?
Typically, the entire process is digital. Sometimes I do a piggy pencil sketch, but then immediately go back to Photoshop and work there until the end. Lately, I have been making everything with just brushes and tons of layers. Photoshop is an impressive program that allows a ton of versatility when painting. As I am very impatient, I do not usually work on other traditional methods. The digital painting needs no space nor any requirement paint to dry. Plus, it’s very clean! When painting with acrylics

Anesthesia – man, this one cuts to the bone – sweetly.
WHAT TOOLS DO YOU USE?
Currently a 21″ iMac, Intuos 4M, and Photoshop CS5.
YOU’VE WRITTEN QUITE A FEW TUTORIALS. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WRITE THEM?
I write them because I constantly use tutorials myself. My first digital painting I felt proud of was after I watched a mini tutorial of Serge Birault. The Internet provides access lots of useful teaching materials when it’s not possible to have to attend a good school. When writing tutorials, I can contribute my two cents and if someone, somewhere in the world, can learn something that otherwise could not, even better.

HAVE ANY PAST OR CURRENT TRENDS HAD ANY INFLUENCE ON YOUR WORK?
Oh yes! It’s not that I’m a fan of a particular style, but there are very strong influences of Lowbrow, Pop Surrealism and Dark Art in my work.

HAVE ANY SPECIFIC ARTISTS INFLUENCED YOU?
As I mentioned before, I started in digital painting through the work of Serge Birault. There are other artists who have also contributed to my inspiration such as David Lachapelle, Mark Ryden or Dave Cooper. The people who have affected me the most are the colleagues I’m lucky enough to have around. They’ve taught me many techniques and motivated me to overcome some barriers. Most importantly they revealed to me the most important lesson:
“NEVER, EVER STOP.”

WHAT UPCOMING PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED?
I would like to make a book in the near future as a personal project. Meanwhile, I’m working on some children books (the first one will soon see the light) and to continue my side project, Sugarflesh.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING ILLUSTRATORS?
That’s a real hard one. The most important would be
“NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SETTLE.”
Whenever you feel comfortable with your work, push it a little further and eventually, make Art your complete lifestyle.
