I absolutely adore pom poms. Who doesn’t? They’re super fun, adorable and very easy to make with just a few supplies from, yes, the dollar store!
The dollar store probably doesn’t strike anyone as the first place to go for stylish and attractive party décor, but with a little bit of time and effort, you can make some really lovely paper pom poms for any kind of celebration and no one would suspect you paid less than $20 for all of it!
Here’s what you need and how I did it.
What You Need
- A pack of tissue paper
- Thin wire
- String, twine, ribbon, or anything you want to hang your pom pom with
Stack 8-10 sheets of standard tissue paper on top of each other. The more sheets you use, the fluffier and fuller your pom pom will be.
Starting from 1 end, accordion fold the stack until all of it has been folded up. I used 1.5-2” folds.
Twist a small piece of wire around the middle of the length.
Tie a piece of string around the wire. You can also use a pretty ribbon, clear fishing line, or anything that you want to hang the pom pom with. I used some rustic jute twine.
Trim the ends of the length of paper to your desired shape. In this picture I trimmed them round, which makes the pom pom have a scalloped, petal-like shape, but you can also make the ends pointy for a more spiky look.
Holding on to the middle wire, separate and fan out all the layers of the tissue paper by pulling them towards the middle wire. Be careful not to tug too hard, or the paper might rip. Tug lightly to fluff and adjust the layers to your desired overall shape.
Voila! You’ve made yourself a festive, impressive, cute, and very affordable paper pom pom!
These pom poms are extremely versatile and can be used for practically any occasion – just switch up the colors! Red, white, and blue for a 4th of July party, creams, whites and pastels for a baby shower, shades of orange and yellow for a summer party, the color combinations are never ending.
To make a smaller pom pom, you can cut the tissue paper into smaller squares, or simply do what I did: use some cocktail napkins (that I also picked up from the dollar store)! They work just as well.
Make them for your next party and your guests will be delighted and impressed that you made them yourself! Just don’t tell them how simple and cheap they were to make!
